History

From castle to wedding, in five scenes

  1. 1264 — The tower of Barxell

    A document of 1264 already records the castle, a medieval building of the 13th century. Its rammed-earth tower rises some twenty metres above the rock.

  2. 1467 — A castle of the town

    In 1467, according to one guide to fortifications, the jurats (town magistrates) of Alcoy bought the settlement of Barxell. Another guide places the castle’s acquisition in the mid-15th century.

  3. 1850 — From castle to farmhouse

    Around 1850, according to the Viquipèdia, the castle became a farmhouse, with several alterations (other guides place this in the 18th century). It stopped being lived in in 1964 and, in 1996, was declared a site of cultural interest.

  4. 2014 — Back to life

    It was 2014 and, after three years of works, Castell de Barxell Events was born, on Xavi Martínez’s estate of some nine hectares with the castle, a farmhouse and a chapel: the castle was consolidated, the farmhouse restored as a hall and the chapel for civil ceremonies.

  5. Today — A castle to celebrate in

    A hall in the farmhouse, the chapel for ceremonies, cypress gardens and, above it all, the castle. A new hall is being fitted out at the other end of the farmhouse. The next wedding is yours.

Tower, chapel, hall and garden

A 13th-century castle, a chapel, the farmhouse hall and cypress gardens, six kilometres from Alcoy, between the Font Roja and Serra Mariola natural parks.

  1. The castleThe rammed-earth tower and walls of the 13th century, a listed cultural heritage site since 1996, consolidated by the owner to halt their decay. Bodas.net lists it as an outdoor space.
  2. The Sant Josep chapelA deconsecrated chapel beside the farmhouse, in stone and warm light, restored for civil ceremonies. Bodas.net lists up to 100 guests.
  3. The farmhouse hallThe farmhouse, restored as a banqueting hall with part of its original structure: a beamed ceiling and glass onto the garden. Bodas.net lists the Salón Panoràmic (up to 500) and the Salón La Cava (150).
  4. La CavaA hall with a brick vault and exposed stone walls, a timber floor and warm light along the wall. According to Bodas.net it holds up to 150 guests and serves for the banquet, the party, a civil ceremony or the cocktail.
  5. The gardensLawn with stone slabs, cypresses and clipped trees, between the Font Roja and Serra Mariola natural parks. Bodas.net lists the Jardín de las Catalpas (up to 1,000) and the Soterroni altar (600), in the open air.

A welcome drinks reception in the gardens, among cypresses and clipped trees, with music if you like. The kitchen is the castle’s own.

While the drinks go on, the light turns gold, then pink, then blue among the cypresses and the hills. It’s the hour for photographs.
